Tweens – “The Forgotten Years”

Lately I’ve been shooting a little more for myself and it’s been great. I love working with girls of all ages because I want them all to see just how beautiful they are even when they can’t see it for themselves.

Recently I decided to do a project designed around tweens…..often the forgotten age when it comes to professional pictures.

Most often we photograph our children when they are babies and toddlers, but once they enter school we rely on that school picture alone to capture their yearly growth. What we can’t see in that yearly photo, however, is their personality. They are changing so much and the transition from child to teenager is a big one. Your child may feel awkward during this stage in life and self esteem may be taking a dive. Why not create images that show how amazing and fun and beautiful your child is even in the midst of this change from child to teen?

Our society is great at putting pressure on young girls. Pressure to be thinner, prettier, and smarter. The tween years are awkward enough without having to worry about how to be perfect. I want all girls to feel beautiful inside and out. I’m hoping these sessions help them with that!

Let them design their own session from outfits to overall theme. Not only is it fun for them, but a huge boost in confidence…….something very important at this age.

Celebrate these last moments of childhood. Don’t let there be a gap in your photographic memories!

Kelsey: age 11
Hobbies: Horseback riding, crafting, softball, basketball, track, swim team, gymnastics, and dance
Strengths: School, work, being kind
Weaknesses: Organization and keep track of time
Ambition: I want to be a vet when I grow up

FROM MOM:
Kelsey’s greatest strengths are that she never gives up. She will work on something for hours until it works the way she wants. She is also one tough cookie….she just keeps going! She gives 110% at everything she does (except cleaning her room!). She is so kind and helpful to anyone.

What does it mean to be beautiful?
Kelsey – “Being beautiful to me doesn’t mean being pretty. It means being nice and helpful towards other people.”

Where does pressure to be beautiful come from?
Kelsey – “Pressure comes from music videos, websites, TV, and magazines. They all make people want to be like everyone else when they should be themselves.”
